Thriving in Transition: A Marketer’s Transition to PR in Dubai

Greetings from Dubai! I am Jihane Essabiq, a 26-year-old Moroccan professional who has recently ventured into the dynamic realm of public relations after a successful stint in marketing. Join me as I recount my exciting journey, outline the key distinctions between these two industries, and reflect on how this transformation has shaped my identity.

A Brief Introduction

Born and raised in Morocco, I was always captivated by the power of communication and its ability to sway opinions and decisions. This intrigue guided me towards marketing, where I discovered my passion for creativity and its far-reaching effects. Following my graduation, I secured a position in a marketing firm, believing that I had found my calling.

Taking the Plunge

An opportunity to move to Dubai presented itself, and I seized it, knowing it would spur personal growth and present new challenges. This decision, while difficult, was only the beginning of the changes that awaited me. Upon arriving in Dubai, I was offered a role in public relations. Embracing the uncertainty, I accepted the position and embarked on this new path.

Marketing vs. PR: A Fresh Outlook

My foray into public relations has shed light on a distinct facet of communication. While marketing concentrates on advertising products and services to customers, PR emphasizes cultivating a positive image and fostering robust relationships between an organization and its clients, as well as the media, influencers and partners. I have found that PR demands a nuanced understanding of audience values, a more tactical approach at a junior level, and strategic expertise in handling intricate issues.

In my current role, I have had the chance to delve into media relations. This experience has been both demanding and gratifying, pushing me to refine my existing skills and acquire new ones.

Creating a New Identity

Throughout this transition, I have grappled with self-doubt, isolation, and fear of failure. However, these challenges have imparted invaluable lessons and ultimately fortified my resolve. This journey has also enabled me to form meaningful connections with people from varied backgrounds and appreciate different cultures. I firmly believe that empathy and compassion are vital qualities for a PR professional, and my personal experiences have only reinforced their significance.

Residing in Dubai has urged me to push my limits and discover my capabilities. I have come to understand that embracing change, even when daunting, can lead to remarkable growth and self-improvement.

Envisioning the Future

As I continue to evolve and flourish in my career, I eagerly anticipate the adventures that lie ahead in the world of public relations. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the relationships forged, and the person I have become. May my story inspire others to take risks and embrace life’s unpredictable twists and turns.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights from my PR journey. Until then, have faith in your abilities, and remember: life truly begins at the edge of your comfort zone.
